Anthologies and Paarppaar

Abstract

The primary objective of this research is to analyze the socio-cultural representations of 'Paarppaar' as documented in the Sangam anthologies (Thogai Ilakkiam). The study relies on primary sources such as the core hymns, their colophons, and the epilogues (Pathigams) of Pathitruppattu. Secondary data is derived from Tolkappiyam, contemporary literature, lexicons, and the interpretations of medieval commentators and compilers. The research highlights a significant divergence in the portrayal of 'Paarppaar' between Akam (interior) and Puram (exterior) poetry. It argues that while Akam literature offers a secular depiction, the elevated status of 'Paarppaar' in Puram contexts reflects the subjective biases and ideological interventions of the compilers. The study concludes that editorial layers significantly influenced the historical narrative of the Sangam social hierarchy.
