Abstract

Literature serves as a vital historical document that records the lived experiences of diverse communities. This research paper aims to critically examine the ethnographic elements of the Bharathavar (coastal/fishing) community as depicted in Raj Gauthaman's seminal novel Alaiwaikarai. The study systematically classifies and analyzes the cultural data embedded in the narrative, focusing on the community's geographical landscape, historical timeline, inherited cultural transformations, and contemporary socio-economic challenges. Methodologically, this paper employs a multidisciplinary framework integrating analytical, descriptive, sociological, historical, and ethnographic approaches. While fictional narratives like novels are products of creative imagination, they are intrinsically rooted in human reality. This article marks the first dedicated ethnographic study on the Bharathavar community within the context of this specific novel. Ultimately, the study concludes by illuminating how traditional coastal lifestyles adapt or fragment under modern societal shifts, thereby offering valuable socio-historical insights to contemporary society.
